Flora Hut in her Finished Clothing!
Nelson Tramping Club has had a long association with Flora Hut. The most recent involvement was back in 2013, when the Club did a major renovation on the hut. The roof was removed and sheets of clear plastic were installed over each bunkroom to provide more light. The ceiling and walls were lined while leaving the original framing exposed. This helped maintain more of the heritage character of the hut.
‘Flora’ was first given a good wash down in late November, and the two chimneys given an undercoat of Galvo One. (Ray’s Trip Report) This was followed by three further days of painting the roof and the walls, then finally the wooden doors and trim around the windows. The hot weather made the roof painting particularly difficult meaning early finishes in the afternoon. The battered old iron added to the challenge of giving it good coverage!
The inside woodwork will also be given a spruce-up in the autumn. (keep an eye out for the next opportunity to volunteer) The paint job will have ‘Flora’ looking prim and proper for her upcoming centenary in 2027.
