URL;VALUE=URI:https://www.live.nelsontrampingclub.org.nz/events/1484/maitai-pipeline?tmpl
 =component
DESCRIPTION:Starting from the Maitai dam, a one way walk along the pipe maintenance tra
ck to the point where the pipeline crosses the river near the Maitai motor
camp. Cars will be retrieved from the dam at the end of the walk. 7km and a
pprox 250m climb.\nPossible to extend walk up to Tantragee Saddle and back
to the cars, if group decide.\nUpdate: Fri 10.01.25\nWe will meet at the Ca
thedral steps at 8.30am. The weather should be mild, but no rain.\nWe will
start the walk looking at the Maitai dam infrastructure before walking alon
g the pipeline route as part of the Coppermine trail to the Smith Ford brid
ge, where the trail meets the Maitai river road. A climb of 40m up the othe
r side of the river valley will get us back onto the pipeline route. We sta
y high above the river valley as the pipeline falls ever so gently. There a
re lovely views from there. Above the Maitai Whara Iti cabins we drop down
into the valley again, cross the Maitai river above the pipeline and back u
p the pipeline on the other side of the valley to the water treatment sludg
e ponds. There we will investigate the final section of the pipeline as it
tunnels through the hillside under the Tantragee saddle to the treatment wo
rks. Bring a torch, just in case.\nBack to the cars parked at the pipeline
crossing just above the motor camp. \nhttps://shape.nelson.govt.nz/maitai-d
