SUMMARY:Cable Bay Walkway
URL;VALUE=URI:https://www.live.nelsontrampingclub.org.nz/events/1132/cable-bay-walkway?tm
 pl=component
DESCRIPTION:\nNOTE: change of day to Sunday. Saturday will be the reserve day. Grade is
medium/fit.\nAssemble at Nelson Cathedral steps at 0930 and drive to Glend
uan (14km). Low water Nelson is 1351.\nFrom Glenduan, walk along the boulde
ry beach NE towards Cable Bay. About 1km before Ataata Point, climb up a st
eep, exposed grassy slope to a low saddle at about 175m. Walk SW along Cabl
e Bay Walkway back to Glenduan. Sentinel Hill is just NE of the saddle, and
could be a scenic spot to enjoy a late lunch. Optional side trip to drop d
own the walkway from the saddle to visit Cable Bay. Optional side trip to c
limb Drumduan 657m. Do both, it won't be dark until 10pm! ?\nUpdate: the pr
ogramme coordinator and I walked this route Wednesday afternoon 23 November
and found the landscape somewhat altered due to recent storm effects. On t
he positive side, I found the beach walk a little easier due to gravel from
the recent slips being spread by wave action. On the negative side, the fi
rst 20m of climb towards the saddle is steeper, and if you don't have a rea
sonable head for heights you might find it a bit challenging. By sticking t
o the long grass, the steeper section can be mostly avoided. We both sustai
ned mild/moderate allergic contact dermatitis from the vegetation. If you s
uffer readily from this type of allergy, you should consider bringing a sui
table antihistamine with you, and/or wearing long pants and a long-sleeved
shirt. Gloves to prevent grass cuts are also worth considering. A narrow sl
ip gully from top to bottom has cleft the slope, meaning the climb will tak
e you about 300m SW of the saddle. If you arrive at the base of the climb a
nd decide it is not for you, you have the option of returning back along th
e beach. The beach walk is about 4km, 1.5 hours one way plus breaks. A repo
rt with photos is posted on the club Facebook page (link is on the right ha
nd side of the club home page).              Reasonably good weather is req
uired for this trip to go ahead.\n This event was imported from: https://ww
