Saddle Hill (1217m) sits above the Maitai Dam and pro vides expansive and all-round views. (Hence the radio masts as well!)
It's nearby 'sister" or 'first double' is 1168 m with about 2 km (and a lo w saddle) between them. From the carpark near the Caretaker's House at the dam it is just over a 900m climb to the First Double, then down and up agai n to the Second Double or Saddle Hill. So it is a good workout but the view s make it worthwhile.
NTC has been doing maintenance work on the trac k from Teal Saddle including replacing missing track markers! The other tra ck from Maungatapu Saddle is no longer maintained by DOC either, so the Clu b plans to replace any missing track markers on that track as well.
O n Sunday 12th October, the Club has arranged a 4WD Shuttle (Scottish Express) to take trampers and track volunteers up to Maungatapu Saddle for an easier walk-in to both peaks. That will take approx 500 m off the climb and save a couple of hours of climbing. It will still leave a go od workout across the top, and the 1000m descent back to the Carpark. It wi ll also give more time for the Club to replace any missing markers.
We need a few volunteers for the maintenace work, but the event is ope n to all interested trampers.[$12 including the Shuttle). A small 'team' wi ll be needed to walk up the Zig Zag Track towards the First Double to check those track-markers. (I will be one of those!)
