| 5 day tramp from Wangapeka through to Little Wanganui on the West Coast, going over Biggs Tops to Trevor Carter Hut. Day 1 Rolling River Junction Carpark to Stone Hut (10 Bunks) 6Hrs 19.7km. The Track follows the Wangapeka River all the way, Kings Hut is reached after 3.5hrs, Stone Hut further 2.5hrs on.Day 2 Stone Hut to Trevor Carter Hut (12bunks) 6.5hrs. via Biggs TopsFrom Wangapeka Saddle follow a route to Biggs Tops. This route is not recommended in poor weather or after heavy rain. The highest point is at 1384M then a steep descent to Trevor Carter Hut. Day 3 Follow the Karamea River and sidle through the bush to the Tabernacle Lookout above Saxon Falls. The track then drops to Taipo footbridge, then climbs steadily above the river for several km to Taipo Hut.Day 4 Taipo Hut to Belltowm Marunui Hut (10bunks). 6.5hrs 10.2km. The route gradually gets steeper . towards Stag Flat Bivvy, then steeply to Little Wanganui Saddle (1087M). It then drops steeply to Little Wanganui River. A swing bridge brings the track to the true right of the river, continues to Tangent Creek, then climbs above the river and sidles around the gorge. The track then drops back down to the river and on to the hut.Day 5 Belltown Marunui Hut to Wangapeka road carpark. 3hrs 10km. A quick sprint to the carpark via river flats, river bed and an old access road. Meet the shuttle and travel back to Nelson |
