Start from the end of Pearse Valley Road in the Motueka Valley. Follow the Pearse River upstream with multiple river crossings, until we get to a large grassy clearing near the resurgence of the Pearse River, where the river emerges from the caves under the Pearse Valley. Beautiful clear water and interesting karst features. 5km each way, approx 6 hours return. High chance of seeing whio (blue duck). There are multiple river crossings on this walk with slippery rocks, and the water is very cold. Come wearing boots or shoes with good grip that you are happy to get wet. A walking pole or two will also be handy. We will need good weather without recent heavy rain. 4WD vehicles needed to access the road end. |
