Description
THIS TRIP HAS BEEN CANCELLED DUE TO LACK OF REGISTRATIONS. Arrive at Sabine Hut for the night late Wednesday (via water taxi. Should be possible to leave after work. Last taxi 4.30pm dept, cost $65pp one way). Then walk to Blue lake Hut on Thursday (Waintangi Day. We might have to camp), 8.5 hrs. That gives us more options to split the following days if needed. Plan A: Friday Moss Pass. Saturday down to Morgan or d'Urville Hut. Go home Saturday night or stay in d'Urville hut. Water taxi and drive home Sunday Plan B: Allow to stay put on a rainy day and walk all the way out the d'Urville and water taxi out on Sunday. Home Sunday night. I have not done this tramp. It is partly a route only, with very steep sections. All times quoted are estimated and taken from DoC site. Please read the reports in the links below and be sure you have the fitness and experience necessary for this tramp. Wednesday: leave Nelson at 2.30pm at the very latest, ideally by 1.30pm, depending on trampers' work schedule. Water taxi to Sabine Hut, 480m asl. $65pp for taxi if 4 or more. Hut must be booked!!! Bed costs $25. Or free camping near the hut with camping/backcountry pass, no booking. Camping $10 without pass. Thursday is a long day! 8.5 hrs to Blue lake Hut. Hut must be booked, $25!! Or camp for $10, or camp free with backcountry/camping pass. 1190m asl. Friday across Moss Pass (steep!!) to George Lyon/Ella Hut, 16 bunks, $10 or hut pass, no bookings, 660m asl. Moss Pass is 1785m up, steep route. Fitness and alpine experience required!!! Saturday 4 hrs to Morgan Hut, 545m asl, 10 bunks, $10 or pass, no bookings. Preference, depending on weather, is to continue to D,Urville Hut, 10bunks, $10 or pass, no bookings, 480m asl. Stay there for the night or taxi out. Depending on weather, we either walk/taxi out late on Saturday, or Sunday lunch time (if staying at Morgans), or Sunday afternoon.
