This is a wet-boot tramp to a seldom-visited NZFS hut near Lewis Pass. PLAN A: Day1: Drive 3 hours past Springs Junction. From the Marble Hill car park, ford the Maruia River upstream and follow a 4WD track alongside the Alfred Stream (1.5 hrs). Look out for track sign, prior to descending to Pell Stream, (where one can see Blackadder's Hut on the far terrace. This private hut is a left-over from gold mining.) Follow a good benched track to reach Gilchrist Creek and descend into Pell Stream. Head upstream, fording where required and exiting the stream bed onto a plateau to avoid a gorged section. Dropping back into the stream and then crossing 2km of grassy flats up to the hut.(4 bunks + woodstove). Day 2: Return via same route. 6-7 hours one way.
