DESCRIPTION:NEW YEAR TRAMP 26 - 31 December 2025 | Lake Sumner Forest Park\nA (mostly) 
 easy ramble through red beech forest and river flats to 3 hot springs and 8
  backcountry huts. This will be a useful warm-up trip before tackling harde
 r summer tramps.\nTotal Distance: 95km. Hardest day climb: 650m elevation g
 ain off-track.\nDay 1: We drive over Lewis Pass, don boots and packs, then 
 begin walking at the aptly-named Windy Point. Very straight-forward river f
 lats make for quick progress alongside the Hope River. We veer off Te Araro
 a to stay at St Jacobs Hut. (16km).\nDay 2: A relaxed amble along to Top Ho
 pe Hut (6km) with an afternoon mission to the hot spring up (wait for it ..
 . insert drum roll) Hot Spring Stream (5km return).\nDay 3: The biggie. We 
 head up-valley to gain Hope Pass (951m), then climb 650m (vertical) up ridg
 e on to the Nelson Tops, summiting at nearly 1600m. After appreciating the 
 vegetable sheep and views, we drop down to stay at Mackenzie Bivouac and so
 ak in the nearby springs. (14km)\nDay 4: Visit Mackenzie Hut, before stream
 -bashing down to cross the Hurunui River, stopping at the main hot springs 
 above the popular TA route over Harper Pass. Either camp at springs, or pus
 h on to stay at Hurunui Hut. (<12km)\nDay 5: Once across the Hurunui usi
 ng a particularly long swingbridge, we tramp north up the McMillan Stream, 
 turning NE up to Three Mile Stream Hut. (12km)\nDay 6: On the last day, we 
 head over a low bush saddle to reach the spacious Hope Kiwi Lodge, and head
  back down the Hope River from whence we came :-) 15km but on easy river fl
